Back-to-School Survival Guide

Here’s how to make the most of the year ahead!

Make New Friends

Introduce yourself to kids you don’t know. Start by saying “hi.” You could also ask about their summer. Did they go on any trips or spend time with family? Then share something about your summer. That will help keep the chat going.

Don’t Wait!

You’re going to start your homework . . . as soon as you finish this one last YouTube video. Sound familiar?

To avoid procrastinating, try this:

  • Make a list of everything you have to do. Check things off as you finish them.
  • Set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes. Work until it goes off.
  • Take a 5-minute break. Stretch your legs. Have a snack. Play with your pet.
  • When you’re finished, reward yourself! Read your favorite book or play outside.

Relax and Refocus

Does taking a test stress you out? If you feel overwhelmed, use your five senses to help calm down.

  1. Name five things you can see.
  2. Identify four things you can hear.
  3. List three things you can feel.
  4. Name two things you can smell.
  5. Identify one thing you can taste

  1. What does the article say you could ask someone about to try to make a new friend? What other questions might you ask?
  2. Based on the article, what are two ways you could keep from procrastinating doing your homework?
  3. In your own words, what is the main idea of the section “Relax and Refocus”?
